A chair quandry–what would you do?

So, I have made my first major purchase for the baby’s room.

I knew I wanted a big cushy rocking chair or glider.  But I did not want to pay the hundreds of dollars they cost.  (What can I say – that’s just not me).  So for weeks now, I have been stalking Craigslist to see if one came up.

Finally, one did.  And it was a great price so I snapped it up.  Of course, things that are perfect usually aren’t cheap and things that are a great price usually aren’t perfect.  And that was true in this case as well.

The color was described as sage green, but I would say it is actually more of a greige.  (The seller probably didn’t realize that greige – gray beige – was a color or they certainly would have called it that).  It is certainly not my first choice of color but it is neutral and definitely workable.  The real problem is the arms.

Certainly less than perfect.

So now I am figuring out what exactly I want to do to polish up this chair.  As far as I can see, I have four options.

  • Accept it as is.  I could always take the easy route and just trim up the scratched sections and call it done.
  • Buy a slipcover.  I could buy a slipcover to throw over it.  This would also be pretty easy and I could get pretty much whatever color I want.  But slipcovers aren’t terribly cheap.  Plus they don’t always fit great which means they tend to bunch up and look wrinkly.
  • Make a slipcover.  This would be more affordable and I could use any fabric I want.  Plus it would be a custom fit so no wrinkly mess.  However, I am not a great seamstress.  I have sewed several projects successfully but it always takes me about five times as long as it should.
  • Reupholster the chair.  This would take care of all the problems but it would be a whole heck of a lot of work.  And there is a chance I would get the whole chair taken apart and then realize I was in over my head.   On the other hand, I somehow feel much more confident in my ability to do this than my ability to sew a slipcover.  And I have upholstered a few small projects before.

What would you do?  Anyone have experience reupholstering or making slipcovers? I like to think I can do pretty much anything, but maybe I’m overlooking some major pitfalls. So what would you do – leave it, buy a slipcover, make a slipcover, reupholster, or something totally different?

Thanks for the help!
